We went camping the last weekend in July, and at some point that weekend or shortly after she got bitten by a spider in two places on her foot. :( We didn't notice anything until Wednesday or Thursday, Wednesday night I shooed a mosquito off her foot, Thursday morning we were like "woah! that's a big foot Maya!" It had swollen up a crazy, crazy amount, you couldn't see her ankle bone and went all the way to her toes. I got her some benadryl ointment from the pharmacist, that did diddly squat, called health link that afternoon and she recommended elevating and icing it, and getting into the doctors office the next day. Ian and I went out that night (yes, bad parents) and left her with Mamere (Ian's mom) and she iced and elevated it some more. That night however at 3 AM she woke up screaming her poor head off in pain, so I called health link again, and because the redness of the swelling had spread, she called the doctor on call to call me back to assess, and that doctor recommended going to the emergency room at the Childrens Hospital to get her looked at.

She was crazy at ACH, bouncing between all the toys because there was no one else there. It didn't affect her walking at all, or running, she was so excited to talk to everyone and show them her bug bites (which she talked about for WEEKS and weeks) and the staff was fantastic. So there she was diagnosed with cellulitis (skin infection) and prescribed K-flex (sp?). The doctor said it was bad enough to warrant IV antibiotics, and the doctor on call I spoke to said it was important to get her seen that night because if it WAS cellulitis that it can spread very quickly. Scary stuff! I'm glad we were relatively on top of it. So, we finished up the K-flex Aug 7th, and that totally destroyed her stomach, since then (2 weeks later!) she's had diarrea and an upset tummy. So over that weekend after finishing the medication, her foot was better, but started to get worse again. I called health link who wanted her seen within 24 hours, and called our family doctor to get an appontment and couldn't get in...so we were at the mercy of the walk in clinic. We went to a clinic I hadn't been to before, I don't usually have good luck at walk ins. This doctor prescribed a bacterial cream after barely looking at her foot, and I had a feeling it wouldn't do the trick, but gave it a shot. Sure enough, it didn't do squat, so I called health link again (this is call number 4 I think!) and they got us into the after hours clinic through the Primary Care Network. Thank GOD for the after hours clinic, seriously. So we trucked in there, saw a nice doctor who prescribed us an antibiotic ointment which seems to have cleared things up.

That weekend we were off camping again, arrived the Monday, and then Tuesday she started saying she was going to puke and had diarrea all. day. long. She did puke a few times too. :( She perked up after having some Gatorade and made it through the rest of the trip uneventfully thank goodness! At least until Friday morning, she woke up and I thought her one eye looked kind of puffy. It only got worse as the day progressed unfortunately, by the time we had made the 4 hr trek into Calgary it was quite bad, even Ian was concerned and that's how I know it's time to worry. So as soon as we got home, I called health link again (yay for health link!) and got an appointment for the after hours clinic once again. This time she was diagnosed with pink eye and prescribed eye drops, which SUCK to give as she hates them. We were also asked to get a stool sample (oh joy!) to test for some kind of gastric infection that she may have gotten from the Kflex for her foot.

My poor girl. :( I have a hard time not crying when I look at her right now, it's so hard to see her eyes so puffy, and she's been through so very much in this last month with all her health troubles. The one upside has been how funny she's been about her bug bites, she wants to show eeeeveryone her bug bites, she got on the phone with Papa (Ian's dad) and the first thing she was was "Hi, Papa? I have bug bites!" and points at her foot and nods like he can see her foot. Ah crack me up.

And now Julia is running a fever! I'm hoping it's just teething.dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-56989287901395320242009-07-29T15:41:00.001-06:002009-07-29T15:41:24.145-06:00My smarty pantsIan and I were lucky enough to escape for a few hours last night to a movie thanks to my mom. As we were leaving, Maya came running up, demanding a hug and then pulled back, shook her finger at us and said sternly "Now be careful! It's raining! Don't get wet!" even thinking about it now makes me laugh.

-- Post From My iPhone
dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-32820136987381233952009-03-22T22:26:00.002-06:002009-03-22T23:25:36.824-06:00Weekend fun! This weekend we woke up early to hit the zoo Saturday morning, we were hoping to make it there before they fed the Koalas so we could catch them moving around. Unfortunately we were about a half hour late, and they were, of course, sacked out already. They were fun to look at just the same, and Maya kept trying to wake them up, yelling "Koala! Wake up Koala!" The lady at the koalas laughed at her. She showed her a Eucalyptus leaf, told her to smell it, and she did. I said Maya, that's called eucalyptus, can you say eucalyptus? And she tried so hard, it was pretty cute. After we left the koalas, we went for a play in the playground area, I was in the bathroom and when I came out I couldn't find Ian in the under 2. Well...little Maya had beelined it for the age 6-12 area! And she had climbed up all by herself! I was amazed at how brave she was. Although in a few spots, she needed help and she found a few kids to help her along the way. She'd say "Can you help me?" and after they gave her a boost up or whatever, she'd say "Thank you!" When she talked about it later too, because I reminded her about climbing up and how brave she was, and how nice it was of the kids, and how polite she was, she'd say "very nice kids! Maya say thank you!" Man she is so cute! She even went down the slides by herself, which amazed me. Even tunnel slides! Usually she's too scared to go by herself, not anymore!

I took her to the park the other day and she was just starting to go by herself on the slides, and killing herself laughing on the swings. :) A little girl came, of course just as we were leaving (always the way!) and she said "hi kid! My name Maya! Come on, come play!"

The day after that day at the park, I took Julia and Maya both, Maya beelined it for the slides, and I took the opportunity to put Julia in the swing before her sister dominated it. I sat her in and gave her a good solid push...well poor Julia basically held her breath and looked like she was struggling to breathe! I stopped the swing and she was OK...pushed her again and same thing! I had to push her really really slowly, I forgot that I think it was actually her first time on the swing, poor thing had no idea what was going on! As soon as I slowed the swing down she started giggling like crazy, especially after Maya slapped her feet and pushed her in the swing too. After I took Julia out, I managed to get her into the baby carrier on my back, all by myself! Well, Maya helped, by clipping the straps for me before they were secured around Julia and I! Thanks, Maya.

One of the other things Maya says all the time- "Maya all self!" (Maya all by herself) Oh and "One second mommy, one second!" or two minutes, or two seconds, etc. Such a nut. :)dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-26687480853750866202009-03-17T23:25:00.002-06:002009-03-17T23:41:00.177-06:00Giggles and first sicknessJulia's been an extraordinarily healthy baby, she's 9 months old and she's only ever been to see medical professionals for her vaccinations, which means she hasn't been to the doctor since she was born. Public health nurses do the vaccinations around here. However, we had to take her into the doctor as she's been pulling on her ears and smacking them around for awhile. Sure enough, first ear infection! Strangely enough, she's been mostly happy through it all, all of a sudden now she's not feeling super well and she's unhappy...and sleeping in bed beside me again. Tonight she didn't even make it into her crib! My poor kiddo.

Maya has finally figured out how to pedal her trike instead of just pushing it with her feet. I shouldn't say finally, she probably would have figured it out awhile ago but it's been sitting under snow hah. We took it out into the street the other day to go and get the mail, we were eating crackers as we went. Maya dropped her cracker, I stepped on it and it was reduced to crumbs. She was pretty mad, but I said we'd get another one at home and the birds would eat the cracker. She started to get angry at the sky going "Birds! Silly birds! Eat my cracker, hrmph! Birds! Hrmph." It was pretty funny.

Lately she says "You hear that sound?" all the time when she hears a sound. Other things she says "What you doing guys?" and said with an angry tone: "What is going on?" It's funny, I learned awhile ago that Maya is a little parrot of what I say, so I try and say better things. A lot of stuff I don't even realize that I say until I hear it from her. Like "Pretty cool huh?" and "Check it out!" She says those all the time, hah!

Ian told me a funny story too - she was watching him pee, and as he finished up, she goes "wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!" Apparently she used to say "front to back daddy!" until he explained that it worked differently for daddies. :)dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-10923720843817603612009-03-17T16:07:00.001-06:002009-03-17T16:08:31.088-06:00Julia's first steps!Look out world! Julia just took her first steps, two days over 9 months old. She was standing between my legs, and I set her an arms length back, she took 3 or 4 very confident steps towards me, not holding anything! I'm so proud. :Ddragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-69533559293070929862009-03-10T22:54:00.003-06:002009-03-10T23:31:26.253-06:00What's new these days...I've been neglecting the blog again, big surprise. I should really try to update daily just what we were up to that day, etc. That way maybe I won't miss anything!

It's March...that means hardcore cabing fever for me. It's about -20, I am lacking inspiration for fun type activities to do with the kids, and we're all bored out of our tree. We need Spring!!

Julia, as I type this, is sleeping in bed next to me. She's apparently not loving sleeping in her crib, as she wakes up about an hour after going down and cries for me. I'm tired of wasting time trying to get her back to sleep so I generally just bring her into our bed, nurse her, she sleeps and I resume my web surfing. :P Or she sleeps on one of us if she won't sleep in our bed. O well, whatever works right!? I remind myself that the baby stage is so short, and this too shall pass. I tell myself that anyways, bahaha.

Julia is also incredibly adorable these days, so adorable! She's getting really close to walking (as I write this, she's 8 months, 3 weeks old), she'll walk just holding one finger. My MIL told me that Ian was the same way at 8 months, I had my doubts but i don't anymore! People are in awe when I tell them how old she is, she is just so sturdy. No more baby food for her either, she's all about eating the same stuff as we are, if it's something different she knows, and she clamps her little mouth shut. Sometimes to get her to eat, i'll put food on the spoon, let her hold it and eventually the food will find its way into her mouth. She does pretty well! She started dancing a month ago, she does this little sumo stomp and wings her head from side to side, little bounces, that kind of thing. She was watching the bath fill the other day, and she kept bending her knees and trying to jump in. So funny!

Maya is in a really awesome spot right now developmentally and emotionally. Tantrums are rare around here, she wants to please us and help out around the house, mostly because it's fun. If something is spilled on the floor (solid, not liquid) she'll run and grab the dustbuster to suck it up! If she spills something, I'll grab her some paper towel and she'll gladly clean it up, and she says "sorry mama!" And man does she love her sister! Lots of hugs and kisses and cuddles for her sister, and of course mom and dad. She picks up on lots of stuff we say, today she was demanding pears just before supper, Ian wasn't going to get them for her but she said "I'm getting very frustrated!! OK!!!" and was very adament about it, so she got a couple of slices of pear.

We had a real awesome moment a couple weeks ago too! I've been taking Maya to a weekly class at the Y called "Twist and Shout", basically a music and movement class with different songs, dancing, instrument playing, finger plays, etc. Maya absolutely adores it! Before the class that week, she ran into the front room and said she wanted to bring her costumes box that she got for Christmas. I tried to talk her out of it, but there was no stopping her. The class is fairly small, so I knew there would be enough to go around. I asked her if she wanted to bring the costumes so everyone could wear one and she said yes, so everyone could dress up. When we got there, I warned her again that if we brought the costumes into class, that we would have to share and everyone would get to wear one. She said "OK mommy!" When we got into class, she opened up the box, and gave everyone a costume. I was amazed! She had no hesitation whatsoever in just sharing all her costumes. I think she really understands sharing now, or is at least well on her way to understanding.

The Twist and Shout class has actually been great for her. The songs from the class she remembers and sings through the week, like "Open and shut" and we've picked up some new songs to add to our collection at home. In class she is quite the character, when we bring out the instruments, she makes sure that everyone, even the parents, have instruments. At the end when it's time to put them away, she collects them from everyone and puts them away. Such a little mama! Her manners have come a long way too, she almost always says please and thank you, and is now starting to say 'excuse me' too!

It's so amazing to watch them grow!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-39213665140619897882009-02-17T22:07:00.002-07:002009-02-17T22:20:55.795-07:00My girls these daysJulia is getting so very very big! She's crawling everywhere like a maniac, and these days (she's just freshly turned eight months) is clapping her hands gleefully, and smacking our faces. Anything that makes a clapping noise! She is such a loving baby, and is in love with her sister. The two of them love playing together already!

Maya just had her first hair cut, and she did very well. She sat pretty patiently, only squirming when she got her new bangs cut and all her hair was tickling her face. Didn't hurt that they had tv's for her to watch, bubbles to blow, and the whole thing only took about 10 minutes!

Miss crazy pants before:

Julia hanging out in one of the seats:

And after! She's pretending to be the dolls: "Ahhh! Dinosaur scare you! Monster scare you!". And somehow Mister Potatohead has come to save them all. She's saying "great job potato head! great job!"dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-26553512734123743132009-01-06T22:29:00.005-07:002009-01-06T22:33:52.931-07:00Shortie...A few things...i really need to blog but have neither the time nor the patience!

Julia - is crrrazy!!! In two weeks she popped two teeth, learned to crawl, pulled herself up on stuff, had to have her crib dropped, and unfortunately stopped falling asleep on her own booo. But is still so cute it's hard to stand sometimes! In the middle of the night she grabs at my face and sticks her fingers in my mouth as if to check that it's really me, although my breast is in her mouth so who else could it possibly be??

Maya - is crazy too hah. She's started saying "good job mommy!" or "good job daddy!" She also says thanks! and you're welcome! all the time. And "i wub you mommy!" with great big kisses. God I love these kids!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-49676759674318166702008-10-02T14:33:00.003-06:002008-10-02T14:59:59.915-06:00Rolling machineSo Julia is now rolling back to belly, go J! So much harder than belly to back. Only a matter of time now before she figures out that she can roll to get across the room, or coordinate limbs to crawl. Then I'm REALLY in trouble!

Speaking of trouble, Maya's been up to all kinds of no good lately! Yesterday I had some music on for Maya to dance to, I look over from the kitchen to the living room and Maya had pulled Julia to a sit and was trying to dance with her! AUGH! I spazzed out and ran over, hoping that Maya wouldn't just let go of Julia and let her little head clonk on the floor. I went out the other night with some ladies, and was texting with Ian to find out how the girls were doing. Well Maya decided she was going to climb into the crib with Julia! Guess she thought she needed some company. :P

Maya is still off and on with the napping. The days she DOES nap are happy days for mommy, the days she doesn't are long and exhausting. She's also getting her two year molars, and has a little cold right now. She's had a rough time each morning, today she screamed when Daddy went to work and carried on crying for a long time. Sadly I had to resort to tv to get her to calm down, Ian sometimes gives her a soother but then she doesn't want to give it up. She'll be three in May, and still has a soother, lord help us. And also needs to be potty trained still! Which reminds me of another Maya silliness, the other day when she was supposed to be sleeping, I heard her still up so I went upstairs and found she had stripped all her clothes and diaper off, with a pair of leggings on, trying to put on tights as well. Turns out underneath the tights and leggings she had not one, but two pairs of underwear on, backwards though. I think she's ready to ditch the diapers! :Pdragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-29654732674420570002008-09-11T22:17:00.002-06:002008-09-11T22:24:09.674-06:00Getting bigger every day!Julia is giggling! She had her first giggle this past weekend, just shy of three months. I brought home Sophie, the giraffe teething toy every mama has to buy for her kiddo these days, much to Ian's chagrin. (the thing is twenty bucks!) Ian was holding her, i squeaked the toy and she let out her first giggle! Since then she's giggled a bunch more times, mostly when Ian tickles her. Today he was holding her standing so she could dance with her sister, and she laughed some more. These days when I go to kiss her she opens her mouth wide like she's going to eat me. Man, she is one cute baby! I'm so in love with my kiddos.dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-35946689491432801062008-09-03T10:58:00.002-06:002008-09-03T10:59:50.729-06:00She rolls! At two months, 2 weeks and 6 days old, Julia just rolled for the first time from her tummy to her back! She's a really strong little girl, who doesn't mind tummy time too much. Right now it seems like she's trying to roll back from her back to her tummy! She'll get it in no time, I'm sure!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-55385458404387945272008-08-23T12:47:00.005-06:002008-08-23T12:58:55.503-06:00Julia's two month shotsThe shots went really well! She cried of course and was quite angry about the needle pricks, but all in all it went fine. She nursed, then fell asleep, woke up, and went about her night as usual!

She's in the 90th percentile for weight, and 97th for height, big healthy girl! The nurse was telling us of the risks to little babies with siblings at this age; being pulled off a bed or out of her swing because they want to help and hold their sibling (check! well Maya has tried), trying to feed their siblings something they shouldn't have (check! Maya tried feeding Julia sesame seed bagel yesterday), and siblings throwing stuff into the babies crib. At which point we said well, Julia is co-slept, so we have to worry more about her sister rolling over on her...I mean, um...oops? The nurse just laughed though so it's all good, child protective services won't be visiting any time soon!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-26829426763374302942008-08-16T22:15:00.003-06:002008-08-16T22:29:03.489-06:00More on the girlsThe girls are doing awesome, and I'm enjoying having lots of time as a family as Ian has been on vacation. We went camping out to Cypress Hills, which I'll blog on later when we get our pics done. Today we went shopping as we had some gc's to spend for the Gap, got the kids some really cute clothes! Maya had a lot of fun shopping, she kept grabbing clothes everywhere from off the racks and going "Mommy, cuuuute!" "Mommy, shirt, look! Cuuuuuute!" She's so wee, I have to come to terms with the fact that we'll be buying her 18-24 pants for a long time as she is so skinny in the waist. Yep, she's a mini-me all right! She was being all sweet, trying on hats with Ian, and all of a sudden she turned into crazy Maya and started trying to "eat" Ian, fake biting and growling and going "I EAT YOU!!!!" which she does all the time. I'm sure the people in the store though she was nuts!

Later we were watching the Olympics, and the women's marathon was on. Maya calls running "gogogo" so she was pointing at the screen and going "gogogo!" I'm like Maya, they're running! Can you say running? Although gogogo is pretty cute too. Then the men's swimming came on and she freaked RIGHT out! I'd been showing her how to "swim" waving her arms. So she was standing in the living room going "swimming! swimming!" and waving her arms around, naked no less because it was a hot day and she'd been in her wading pool earlier.

Julia is so freaking cute these days too, she is definitely out of the newborn phase, MAN two months goes fast! Her first shots are on Friday, insert quivering sad mommy lip here. My poor little girl. :( She is chatting SO much these days, and smiling. Lots of cooing, gurgling, smiling. She just loves the face time with anyone she can get it with! She's also better at putting herself to sleep than Maya ever was, so far anyways. Knock on wood that continues!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-88732183931245627932008-08-08T23:09:00.001-06:002008-08-08T23:09:58.693-06:007 weeks oldAnd she's giggling. :) And trying to roll over!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-34694462081048643332008-08-07T22:45:00.002-06:002008-08-07T22:48:28.113-06:00Man, I knew she was tiny but...Ian accidentally put Julia's shorts on Maya after he changed miss M's diaper. And they FIT. He had no idea they weren't hers until I told him! They looked pretty darned good too. I was looking up size charts for Gymboree to order some stuff from Ebay, according to her waist measurements the site said she should be in a 3-6 size pant, well guess that proves it! Julia is already in size 3-6 month, at 7 weeks. Growing so fast!

Been a bit of a rough go around here as of late, Maya is giving my sanity a run for it's money. May blog more about it later if I feel like it, maybe not. I think she's cutting out her naps too, WAH.dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-15277539282154252082008-08-04T15:02:00.002-06:002008-08-04T15:06:00.707-06:00Naptime?We put Maya down for a nap today around 12:30, then had to repeatedly go in and check on her when she wasn't sleeping. She finally quieted around 2 o'clock and we figured she was asleep until I heard a big from her through the monitor in the basement, so Ian went to check on her. Few minutes later I hear Ian:

"Yeah, I dunno what your daughter was doing. When i found her she had her feet in the sink, and the toothpaste tube in one hand, putting toothpaste on the mirror. Her feet are pruny from the sink, she has no pants or diaper on and her shirt is soaked to the armpits. I think she tried to get in the shower because the shower door is open. Yeah, I dunno what goes through this kids head."

Me neither daddy, me neither!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-35183511454510957252008-08-01T14:46:00.003-06:002008-08-04T15:07:23.503-06:00Eating with Maya is always funI think eating was tiring her out today, she was trying to lean her head on her fork while eating macaroni and cheese, resulting in her head bobbing up and down to the bowl with the fork as she was stabbing the noodles! She looked at me laughing at her and broke into a huge smile. :)dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-11206201298533630032008-07-31T21:47:00.003-06:002008-08-04T15:07:40.584-06:00You had to be there...
This may not be as funny if you weren't there, but last night I went upstairs to check on Maya after we had a door to door solicitor at 8:51 (oh the rage!) that I thought may have woken Maya. She wasn't in her bed when I peeked, so I looked in our bed, not there, looked in Julia's crib, not there, not in the hardwood room either. So as i'm standing there scratching my head, i figure I should look further into our room and check our bathroom. There she is, standing on the stool by the sink, holding my eye make up removal pads in one hand, and carefully placing them on the counter with the other hand very carefully, the way you'd lay cards down on a table! They were all over the counter! She looks at me and goes "Hi Mommy! I nap!" and she was SO proud of herself. The cat came around the corner, and she gasped a little, got excited and cocked her head a little and went "Hi kitty!!" I couldn't stop laughing, I was almost gasping for breath because she was just cracking me up. My nutty kid! Earlier that night we had been playing with the match game that Shelley gave her for her birthday, I think she pulled the idea from there. I hustled her off to bed, and this time she stayed, hah.

These days she's started to put together "I" with a verb, or something she makes into a verb. "I sleep? Nap? Soo?" (soo=soother)

We traced our bodies out with chalk on the patio out back tonight, one with Maya's little body, another with Julia's, and I tried to show Maya how to do mine. She seemed like she got the hang of it and was tracing my body, then all of a sudden she veered off and started doodling. She makes the funniest concentrating noise, just a really loud "UHHHHHHHH" monotone drone. So she was doing that and doodling while I was laying on the concrete trying to get her to trace me!

And I swear, I swear Julia laughed today! Ah what a sweetie. I can't believe she's 6 weeks!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-37963074160393284022008-07-30T22:07:00.001-06:002008-08-04T15:08:30.735-06:00She walks to the beat of her own drum!Is what I've learned about Maya, she really does! We went to the zoo yesterday and had a great time, Maya keeps me laughing and busy, that's for sure. I handed her her sunglasses, and she promptly put them on, upside down, and wore them that way the whole day, every time I looked at her I couldn't stop laughing. We went to the playground first off so I could nurse Julia, and Maya went through the tunnel there singing and yelling the whole way. She used to be so slow at it that I would go through with her to help hed through but now she's a speed gonzalez and goes through in no time.

So I'm sitting on the bench nursing Julia, and surprise, Maya is gone. I look for the pink sunglasses, no luck. So now I'm walking around the play area holding a nursing baby with my shirt pulled up around my chest. Fabulous! Find her in the older kids play area where there is a little boy who has her cornered and is beating her with these big hanging obstacles. Poor Maya! Good news is she came out without me having to retrieve her with Julia hanging from my boob. :P

Maya has this thing for hippos, like big time. Loves them, and she'll randomly look at us and say quizzically "Hippos?" and get very upset if we aren't going to see hippos right then. So we spent about half an hour looking at hippos. I couldn't help her down to the tank fast enough so she ended up holding the hand of some random woman to make it down the stairs to the tank because she wouldn't wait for me!

We went to the zoo again today, this time to meet up with some friends. Maya had her trusty binoculars with her which she kept looking at the world through, the wrong way! The one time she was looking through them properly was at the hippo tank again, when she was watching the Tilapia fish they keep in the tank. I guess she wanted a closer look at their scales?? Who knows! While we were watching the gorillas, she was pointing at the momma gorilla (she didn't know it was the mother gorilla though) and saying "mommy!" My friend Morgan said "Either she knows this gorilla is the mom, or she thinks you look like a gorilla!" I really hope it was the former, but she'd be a pretty smart monkey to know that.

Yesterday too while we were at the zoo, and I was nursing Julia yet again, she started trying to take her shirt off. I'm trying to get her to put her shirt back on, and she refused, so i'm sitting in the park half naked myself nursing, with a toddler with no shoes, no socks (she removed these too) and her shirt around her waist. She was trying to nurse Julia! Finally i told her that the zoo didn't let little girls without shirts stay at the zoo, and that she had to wear her shirt if she wanted to stay. So she reluctantly put her shirt back on! What a nut...

Julia is doing great, she's starting to spend more time awake, and interacting with us, which is awesome! She is SO smiley, so happy, and so gorgeous. Yes I realize i'm biased. She just takes the world in stride and goes along with Maya and I so easily. While she's awake, she will smile at just about anyone who smiles at her. It's so wonderful!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-58342202042091872022008-07-30T21:45:00.001-06:002008-08-04T15:08:51.381-06:00What I need to try and remind myself...Babies Don’t Keep
By Ruth Hulbert Hamilton

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Lullabye, rockaby, lullabye loo.
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo,
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo,
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs;
Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-65610468417674761042008-07-23T22:48:00.003-06:002008-08-04T15:09:54.110-06:00Getting into the swing of things...Time goes so quickly these days! Julia is getting bigger and bigger and I'm not that emoional about it unless I think about it too much. She smiles all the time now! Huge, face splitting, eye crinkling smiles. And her sister gets cuter and smarter ever day I swear. We had our first moment of baby jealousy/regression the other day when I brought out Maya's old high chair which can be angled back for a newborn so Julia could join us at the table. Maya threw a fit! Luckily I still had an old high chair that was given to us around so Julia was sitting in the Chicco chair, and then Maya - who hasn't sat in a high chair since she was one! - in the Graco high chair. What a weirdo.

We went to storytime Monday with Nana while she was here, and Maya was not very well behaved, she roamed all over the room and wouldn't sit down, of course I was trying to nurse Julia and Maya wouldn't listen to Nana. We went back today and it was great, and so was Maya! They started and ended in a circle holding hands, awww. It was Maya's first time holding other kids hands, and she got right in there, holding hands, trying to sing along. So cute. :)

Later today we were playing outside, Nana bought Maya a little tea set for outside in her playhouse, so she and I had a tea party. She gestured at me to sit down on the bench of her little house, and she poured me tea complete with sugar and cream. Then she put it all away on the shelves of her little house! She's such a cute little girl, so smart!

She also took a huuuge header off the couch today. :( She was bouncing around on the sofa (not smart...i blame daddy as I was cooking!) and went feet over head flying over the arm and onto the tile floor head first. Tears were shed, but she was back to her old self in no time. It was a very very scary spill though.

And me? Well I'm settling into being a stay at home mom I think, we're just trying to figure out how best to make this all work for us. I'm not getting EI like most working/ex working moms because of the lay off situation with work, so we're just getting used to a single income, and it's scary. To me anyways, i don't think anything phases Ian! One thing that changed massively for me since having Julia is my housekeeping skills. Even after I had Maya i was never very good at housekeeping, for some reason I just never got into all the cooking and cleaning. But this time? Man is my house spotless! Even my mom commented on how tidy it was, and that's when you know it's clean. Which was nice, because usually when my mom comes she's offering to clean something for me, which for some reason bugs the crap out of me.

Funny story - I went to register my TD Waterhouse account today online, and there was a section to accept terms of certain financial reporting houses for real time market prices or something. Anyways, there was a section for "non professionals" to fill out, with Name, Address, and Profession, along with four other questions that didn't really pertain to me so I didn't fill those out. Well the form wouldn't accept my answer, it said all the fields must be filled out! So I giggled to myself imagining someone reading my form and typed in: Job Title: Mommy, Job Description: Cooking, Cleaning, Childcare, Employer: Self Employed (I should have put Ian, Maya and Julia!), and I can't remember the fourth question. But really, what the heck else is a "Homemaker" going to put in there?! And can I just say how much I hate the term "Homemaker"? Yick...

Sometime I'll put some effort into figuring out photo posting...dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-39269624255211111262008-07-14T13:39:00.003-06:002008-08-04T15:10:59.682-06:00So begins another weekAnother day, another projectile puke. Arg! And on the day when all my shorts that fit are in the wash. Back to the lovely maternity capris that are now falling off me, sigh.

Julia started smiling last week, at 3 weeks of age. :) She's starting to make a lot more noises other than crying now, she coos and tries to chat a bit, it's pretty funny and so darned adorable. She's sick though too which breaks my heart. She wakes up snorting and crying because she can't breathe, babies don't seem to know how to breathe through their mouths! So her face is all red from not breathing and she's just snorting away. Man that makes for a shitty nights sleep! I really need to take more pictures, but this mama is so freaking tired. And she's sleeping on me most of the time and I dare not disturb her.

I took Maya and Julia to the library this morning for storytime, Maya loved it! They tell a story, then do an activity, and repeat. We even watched a little video too, and Maya narrated it much to the chagrin of the other kids in the room. (the age range is 2-5, so she was one of the youngest ones) At one point there were a whole ton of different animals on the screen and she didn't know which one to point out first; "cowpiggoatsheepgirraffeRRRRRR!(elephant)

And i think she's just entering into the "what's that?" stage. I was reading Martha Stewart cooking magazine or whatever it's called at lunchtime and she started pointing at everything "What's that?" "Pineapple" "p-appel?" "Yep, pineapple honey!"dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-19503095951875481732008-07-07T15:10:00.004-06:002008-08-04T15:11:57.273-06:00Snippets from our lifeSometimes my posts will just come in wee little 'soundbytes' as i have time to jot things down. I want to remember everything and i don't always have time to write ginormous posts or the memory to remember things.

We call Julia "peacock baby" because she sounds just like a peacock when she cries. When she wakes and wants to feed there's no preamble to her demands, just a very sudden crashing shriek that makes you want to attend to her as soon as possible! The funny thing is before she was born, i bought her a stuffed animal toy that rattled, had crinkly paper, bright colours and black and white, just a little toy, and it was a peacock!

Maya had a silly day today. A neighbour had invited us to drop by anytime we wanted to go for a walk, so I packed Julia and Maya up to go for a walk because we were having a frustrating morning. (someone left a pen out that she used to stab the furniture, as well as a glass of pepsi with a few drops left over that got dumped on the carpet and grapes which got trampled into the carpet, all while I was trying to nurse her sister) Well it took me about 20 minutes of trying to get her to take her hands off the van, she kept yelling "CAR!" as in she wanted to go for a car ride. Holy cow kid...she's always trying to get outside to play and here we are, outside, and she wants to get in the car! Finally i dragged out the stroller (while wearing Julia in a sling) and Maya was more than happy to ride in the stroller. Goofball. So we do a quick spin around the neighbourhood, get home and inside, and Maya starts going "Park? Walk?" Gah...we were just there!

I gave Maya a small bowl of jello, and I swear I made her the happiest kid ever, she was so happy. She looked at me and said "Mama? Yello?" and I said "Yeah, Jello!" And she brought me over a spoonful and fed me some jello! So cute. I was singing the Jello song (J-E-L-L-O! - think back to the Bill Cosby days) and she was trying to sing it too but it was coming out more like a cheerleader cheer: "G - E - E - E - O!" over and over. Oh, she calls Julia Gee too, she can't quite say J's yet. It's awesomely cute!dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564828739583839164.post-25706029793808027112008-07-06T22:27:00.001-06:002008-08-04T15:12:52.330-06:00Wow...I have two kids! Two beautiful and amazing girls at that. Julia is now three weeks old and growing in leaps and bounds every day. Maya is 2, and simultaneously fabulous and frustrating! It's such a great age. It will be hard not to gush over everything Maya is doing and not feel bad for not talking as much about Julia, so we'll start with her!

Julia, bless her little heart, sleeps a large part of the day which makes life easier as a new mom of two. She does have occasional painful gassy periods now and then, but we haven't given her gripe water or anything to try and alleviate that. Daddy didn't figure she needed any (roll eyes) but i'll be picking some up the next time we're out grocery shopping. She's been smiling regularly for about a week which is so sweet! She'll smile at her sister goofing around for her or giving her kisses. She's also a champion nurser, just like her sister was. And growing so fast! After just a week she was already a pound heavier than her birth weight which is just amazing.

Big sister Maya is absolutely in love with her little sister, it's wonderful. Adding a sibling to the family could have gone so many ways, I'm so happy that so far it's gone as well as we could have hoped. I'll never forget Maya's little face in the hospital as she peeked her head in my room and said "mommy? baby??" and came running over to see me. Her face just lit up when she saw her sister and immediately she wanted to hug and kiss her, and still does every day! I'm such a lucky mommy.

Maya is hilarious, she makes us laugh and smile daily with all her hijinks and silly things she says and does. I need to make more of an effort to record them for posterity. Right now what makes me smile a lot daily is how polite she is, she always says "yes, please" and "thank you". We're still working on "no thank you" and "you're welcome", but it will come in time!

Anyways - now that I have one post down hopefully more will come. Now, it's bedtime. :)dragonflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15429101157483913699noreply@blogger.com0
